Excellence in joint surgery:
Research-driven innovation
VPS Lakeshore Hospital’s Department of Orthopaedics is among India’s pioneering centres for joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery, combining cutting-edge clinical practice with rigorous academic research and an unparalleled fellowship network.
A Legacy of
Innovation
The VPS Lakeshore Department of Orthopaedics has established itself as a centre of clinical excellence and academic rigour. Our Joint Replacement and Arthroscopy Programme represents one of the first comprehensive, research-backed initiatives of its kind in the country — delivering world-class care while advancing the science of modern orthopaedic surgery. The programme was founded by Dr. Jacob Varughese, who established VPS Lakeshore’s arthroplasty fellowship — one of the first of its kind in India — and whose vision continues to define the department’s academic and clinical identity.
Our Focus
- Advanced joint replacement techniques including robotic-assisted arthroplasty.
- Arthroscopic sports medicine and cartilage restoration.
- Evidence-based clinical decision-making.
- Peer-reviewed research and academic dissemination.

The VPS Lakeshore
Orthopaedic
Fellowship Programme
Shaping the Next Generation of
Orthopaedic Surgeons
The VPS Lakeshore Orthopaedic Fellowship Programme offers an exceptional opportunity for qualified orthopaedic surgeons to train at one of India’s foremost centres for joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery. Designed for surgeons who are committed to subspecialty excellence and academic growth, the programme provides immersive, hands-on training within a high-volume, research-active department led by internationally fellowship-trained consultants. Built on the founding vision of Dr. Jacob Varughese — who established one of India’s first structured arthroplasty fellowships — the programme has a proven track record of producing surgeons who go on to lead in their respective subspecialties.
What Fellows
Will Gain
Clinical Excellence
Fellows will develop advanced surgical competence across the full spectrum of modern orthopaedic surgery — from primary and complex robotic-assisted arthroplasty to arthroscopic sports medicine, cartilage restoration, and osteotomy surgery. Training is structured to build both technical mastery and sound clinical decision-making, with direct operating exposure from day one.
Academic & Research Development
Fellows are expected and supported to contribute to the department’s research output. This includes involvement in prospective data collection, manuscript preparation, and presentation at national and international conferences. Mentorship is provided throughout, with the aim of producing at least one peer-reviewed publication during the fellowship year.
International Network
Through the department’s established collaborations with centres in Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, fellows benefit from an international perspective embedded directly into their training. Exchange opportunities and visiting faculty interactions form a core part of the fellowship experience.
